One of the most important members of the Medici family was Cosimo I. He was part of the popular branch of the family before becoming duke, taking the place of Alessandro called il Moro at the request of the Signoria at the age of just seventeen. This role was entrusted to him, perhaps, with the aim of being manipulated given his tender age by families hitherto adverse to the Medici. If this was the goal, it undoubtedly failed, indeed starting what would become the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in a few decades, as we will see during our visit.
Cosimo I as well as a strong and far-sighted politician also proved to be a great lover of natural sciences, so much so that he brought the carcass of a Sperm Whale to the Loggia dei Lanzi for the Florentines to admire.
